Celebrating R1 - Promoting STEM in Our Community
Promoting Diversity in STEM
Women and minorities are under-represented in Science Technology Engineering & Math (STEM) disciplines diversity. This lack of diversity is tied to many factors, but one key aspect is a lack of exposure to these disciplines. Many underrepresented persons enter college without knowledge of what STEM work is like, what career options are available if they are trained in a STEM discipline, and what preparation might be needed to pursue a STEM career. Importantly, many diverse students also lack role models and mentors in STEM careers.
Help us raise funds for the launch of a new program to provide local high school students with a hands on science lab experience at the UNLV campus. The goal of our program is to provide local high school students with exciting exposure to a STEM laboratory, allow them hands on experience with lab microscope equipment and visually stunning prepared samples, as well as expose them to the incredibly diverse UNLV campus. We want to show them not only what STEM is, but also to give them a sense of belonging in a setting that could otherwise be intimidating. This program will also provide an enriching experience for current UNLV students who will interact with, mentor, and act as role models for visiting students.
